"The Invisible Man" by H.G. Wells

Rating:

I really wanted to enjoy this book; it fought against me on every page. What’s most frustrating is that the majority of my complaints are structural: if this same story was presented in a different way, I have no doubt I would have loved it. This was painfully highlighted by the ending segment of the book, as it was much more engaging and enjoyable than the rest of the story.

What’s most frustrating is that I struggle to find definitive complaints that I can reasonably present. I didn’t enjoy the prose, but it’s hard for me to place why. I did not enjoy the lack of a character whose perspective is followed throughout the book— but that has not stopped me from enjoying books before. At risk of sounding like a 10th grade english class student, I don’t typically enjoy stories written with an omniscient narrator— but again, that is not itself a dealbreaker.

The only definitive conclusion I have come away from it with is that this book just was not for me, which is anything but objective and I feel is a poor review to give. Here it is regardless.
